And the Oscar Goes To . . .

Tuesday, February 28, 2012

I love the movies. I'm sure most of you do too. I saw only two of the movies that were up for an award and that was The Help, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I still want to see War Horse, Iron Lady, The Artist, and after awards night I guess I'll see Hugo eventually. Movies spark my imagination and often fill my creative well. What I love about the Oscars is that we get a chance to see so many wonderfully creative artists in the same room. It reminds me how important art is to each of us. We may not like the same films, the same music, or the same actors and actresses, but we do enjoy creative excellence.

Music helps me create. Much of that music comes from movie soundtracks. I used to have complete silence while I was writing but in my household that didn't last long. If I try to listen to music with lyrics I get lost in the music and lose track of what I'm writing. So instrumentals and soundtracks have become favorites when I'm creating. Here's a few of my favorites: Jane Eyre (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Jack Liedbeck and Dario Marianelli (2011) Soundtrack, War Horse soundtrack by John Williams (2011), Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows by Hans Zimmer (2011).

When they showed the pictures of the many artists we lost this past year, one of them ( I missed who) said, "I'D LIKE TO THANK THE MOVIES."  Me too.

What did you like about the Oscars? Got a favorite movie? Soundtrack?

  1. I listen to instrumental music when I write, as well! That way, I focus on what I'm writing instead of singing along with lyrics. I love anything by John Williams, however I'm come to really love David Nevue's solo piano pieces. Particularly his "Awakenings" project. Absolutely beautiful!

  2. Hi Donna,
I haven't listened to David Nevue before. I have recently fallen in love with Renaissance by Mark Schultz. I'll make it a point to listen to Nevue.

  3. I absolutely love Hans Zimmer. I can't really say I have a favourite piece, they're all good, but I do like 'Time' from the movie Inception with Leo DiCaprio

  4. I stopped watching the Oscars after 2000 when they became political and were used to attack our President. However, this was the first year I tuned in from start to finished mostly because the show seems to be less political these days...thank God!

I LOVE to watch the actresses enter with their beautiful gowns.

My next favorite part is the Memorium section. It always makes me cry!

Hans Zimmer's soundtrack to "Gladiator" is one of my all-time favorites. Of course, anything by John Williams tops my list! I have all the "Star Wars" soundtracks.

Like you, I listen to movie soundtracks while I write. When I wrote "The Dragon Forest" I listened to Lord of the Rings soundtracks!

  5. Hi DRC,
I loved the movie, Inception, but I never got the music. I'll have to listen to, "Time." I'll probably just buy the CD.:)Thanks for sharing that.

  6. Ruth,
I'm glad you tuned in to the Oscars this year. I never watched Gladiator. I was afraid it would be too gory. I didn't realize Zimmer did the soundtrack. Love John Williams. Lord of the Rings sounds like it was the perfect soundtrack for Dragon. What fun!

  7. I didn't tune into the Oscars this year, probably because I've seen more movies this past year than I can count. I saw The Help and loved that. As for music, if I play any when I'm writing it's violinist David Garrett or instrumental gospel hymns. Lyrics distract me too.

  8. Hi Catherine,
I wonder what your favorite movie after, The Help was since you saw so many. Any recommendations? I'll have to listen to David Garrett. I like violin too.
